Donna Getsinger

Donna Getsinger“These hand-built pieces evolve from the visual imagery I have developed during years of work as a painter, print maker, potter and sculptor. They explore the significant qualities of porcelain: its translucency, malleability, color and strength - qualities I value highly. Important elements of these pieces are their color, texture and scale. Their visual impact offers evidence of porcelain’s gift to me as a ceramist.

The construction of this work is dependent upon careful uniting of porcelain slabs within or outside a form. Patterns and textures are revealed on the surface, a result of the construction process. I select the patterns to emphasize and enhance, carve and pierce, adding and removing the clay. I apply glazes and colorants to the surface, choosing complementary colors as accents. To achieve the desired color intensity, most pieces are fired three or four times. My imagery is derived from nature. Like my work, it is constantly changing.”

Donna teaches beginning to advanced hand building in clay with an emphasis on surface design at Edina Art Center.
